REVO v0.33.1: Cinematic Intro Begins

It may not seem like much, especially after you see it, because it’s a very brief sequence and there is absolutely no text, but this change required the partial redesign of several systems to allow it to be inserted into the game’s already well established sequence of events. Fortunately, it was very doable and not a huge headache to accomplish.

But why?

This is counted as a critical item for the month as it has been considered a necessary feature of a “complete” game. It offers the slightest glimpse into the world of REVO by showing players an encounter that was previously taken for granted. As it stands today, the cinematic does not offer any clear revelations and may always be very subtle, but it seemed important to include something like this.

Further Work

Also note that this is not only an unrefined version of the cinematic, it is meant to be followed by an additional sequence which focuses on combat technology. This later sequence probably won’t arrive in an update until early next month at best, because it will be an even more involved redesign process. Once this is fully in place, however, I think many people will be able to appreciate the additional, though slight, context it offers to what will then feel like a more complete game.

Story Optional

I will acknowledge that space shoot-em-ups like REVO are not traditionally known for their stories. Many people have said that a story isn’t even necessary for such a game because it’s simply meant as a quick video arcade experience with lots of fireworks and nothing more. Even so, I do like to build worlds and value a little storytelling over none, even when gameplay itself is the only truly critical element of any game. Because of this, I will attempt to deliver a little something for players who don’t need a story but definitely enjoy when a game has one.

Play REVO

Why not give this game a try. You can play it for free at this unfinished stage of development. Feedback is very helpful, so please try it and tell me what you think. And there’s a new version released each week, so look forward to much more!
