Space Dragons

Because Space Dragons

Let’s dive into my current favorite project: “Space Dragons” is the working title (as in I have no idea what to officially call it yet) of a recent game prototype I’ve been working on. The motivation: because how cool would it be to ride dragons in space!

The basic idea is that you are a human summoned to the cosmic home of mighty space dragons to befriend them and help them restore their broken world. It is intended to be an exploration driven and very atmospheric experience with a little bit of light puzzling. You walk around floating islands but can only traverse between them with the help of dragon flight.

Exploration Puzzles

For those unaware, I already released a playable prototype of an atmospheric, exploration, puzzle game back in the spring of this year called Exo Diver. You can download and play it right now!

Story for the context of this space dragon game is not set in stone and neither is the gameplay which is gradually being tested one layer at a time. First, it was solely about walking around and riding dragons. After that, I implemented the ability to pick fruit and present them to the dragons for them to eat. Doing this is meant to gain their trust and assistance.

At this point, virtually everything is a placeholder and rough example of what the game could be like. In fact, the placeholder for the human is an android, which looks cool and is not bad in concept but isn’t the intended final form. Being a mere prototype, it is quite clunky and unpolished in most ways, but I hope to refine that some as things progress.

Playable coming soon

My plan is to publish something for you to download and try out in the very near future, but I’d like to get a certain amount of gameplay in place even in a rough state before anyone takes the time to offer feedback.

There is more work to do with the fruit picking, namely to add a tree that actually produces fruit even after you pick from it. Honestly, I’m not really sure what all I’m going to try to do before I share an early playable version, but I’ve started laying out some plans and I’m doing some research into various assets and tools I can leverage to be efficient with my time but still achieve a certain level of quality.

So just games?

Watch this space for more space dragon news, but next up I have other cool projects to tell you about, including stuff that is nothing to do with games! Intrigued?

“In a world…”

  • If you could play a game about dragons in space, what would you like to be able to do?
  • Would you enjoy puzzles mixed in with that experience?
  • Would you like to tend a garden of celestial fruit?
  • Do you think I should add in evil dangers and exciting action or stick to a largely zen like mode of play?
  • What do you think I should title a game about dragons and gardens in space?

Let’s talk about space dragons!
