REVO v0.35.0: UI Rebuild & Old Save Files

Get your mouses ready, because this week’s REVO update brings you the click and the boom. Last month’s trend of interface refinement continues plus the save system just learned a new trick.

Mouse Friendly UI

If you prefer to use a mouse for menus, get excited! This is now possible with the newly rebuilt menus like the Title screen and Options screen (now called Settings). When I started REVO, I had no clue about UI, so I rolled my own solution which left it fairly inflexible. For the first time in the game’s history, you can now use a mouse cursor to navigate and interact intuitively with a variety of menu items.

Not every menu has been rebuilt yet, but I should finish the rest in the next week or two. I also didn’t make any major changes to layouts or general design choices, because the point at this time is simply expanded functionality. Fortunately, this rebuild allowed me to improve several areas of the UI that needed some love in addition to mouse compatibility. You can find more details in the REVO Change Log.

Backwards Compatibility

Player progress is stored in a save file. The structure of this file can change from version to version which would render an old save file useless to a new version of the game. That would lose your progress and force you to start over. Sometimes this might be a good idea, but only when there are major changes to the gameplay, not simply because some small detail of data structure was altered.

To avoid this problem, I have expanded the save system to understand old data files. This means it can load an old file, understand its data, and update the file to the latest format. If you do experience a problem with your saved game, please report it immediately so I can avoid future issues and maybe even help you restore some lost progress, but most likely this will cease to be a concern.

I may still force a reset from time to time, but I can be selective about this, and eventually I hope to offer additional features to help you manage your progress data how you prefer. The goal is a very pleasant experience for players.

Give it a shot!

REVO is playable with a new update almost every week or two, so there’s always something fresh to try. Plus the more people play it and offer feedback, the better it can become.
